The stories in this book were written in the Ojibwe syllabic writing by Cecilia Sugarhead, a former resident of Lansdowne House, Ontario. This book is intended in the first instance to be a reader for speakers of the varieties of Ojibwe spoken in northern Ontario, and further, to introduce others to a small portion of the knowledge available in the Ojibwe language.
The stories are presented in both syllabic and Roman (alphabetic) versions. [...] The syllabic originals of the stories are presented in a separate section at the beginning of the volume. The Roman versions appear after the syllabic section. Stories in the Roman section are presented with English translation on facing pages. The Ojibwe-English Glossary gives information about all Ojibwe words which occur in the texts. The Index to the Glossary presents an English-Ojibwe listing of terms which occur in the English translations.
The author was born in the mid 1940s and raised in the region around Lansdowne House, an Ojibwe-speaking community of some two hundred and fifty people on Attawapiskat Lake, approximately four hundred and fifty kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
